Mario Caria is 44 and of Italian Nationality, started his research activity at CERN in the field of Experimental Particle Physics. He has developed innovative detectors for low and high energy nuclear particles for several experiments from low energy antiprotons physics to neutrinos detectors and high energy colliders. He implemented the first Wire and Drift Chambers in a magnetic field, invented new electronic methods for scintillators readout, the first compensating sampling calorimeters and he detected for the first time minimum ionizing particles with superconductors. He has conceived, constructed and implemented the first entire vertex detectors on double sided silicon with external readout.

His domain of activity enlarged to the applications of particle detectors in the biomedical field. He has developed innovative systems in the field of biology, high throughput screening genomics and proteomics, He leads a number of extended collaborations with Hospitals, Industries and Academies in the field of Medical Imaging and Biotechnology also funded by the European Commission for Research. He has a 20 years experience on teaching at all levels students of different nationalities and background, from biology to particle physics. He is author of the book "Measurement Analysis" on Statistics for the field of Chemistry, Physics and Life Science, published by World Scientific in 2000 and Guest Editor for 2 volumes of Nuclear Instruments and Methods on Vertex Detectors and Radiation Imaging Detectors. He is a member of several National and International Scientific Committees. He is currently Professor of Biophysique at the Laboratoire de Biophysique Medicale Faculte de Medicine et Pharmacie at the Universitè d'Auvergne Clermont-Ferrand, France.
